Stable and feature rich router at a good price February 23, 2010 Matthew J. Baran (NJ) I am the sole IT person for a company that has several branch offices and they are all equipped with one of these routers. They are updated to the latest firmware which may play a key role in my success with these routers, but so far I couldn't be happier. Not one has had a problem that couldn't be resolved with a power cycle. I am not doing anything too complex with these as their DHCP/DNS functions are being handled by a windows server and there is no need for VPN yet, but the expandability is good to have. Port forwarding is in use and working fine and the internet access policy, although not the most robust I've seen, it does the job. Internet access is quick and the setup is relatively easy. I am A+,NET+, and CCNA certified, however I don't think the setup requires a professional touch as the web access GUI is pretty intuitive. Lastly the body is good at keeping the unit cool, is easy to mount, and has a pretty small footprint. To combine all of this with a price tag that any power user or SOHO can afford makes it 5 stars to me.
Refurbished Netgear FVS318 - Not Supported! February 15, 2010 Marvin A. Pakizer I thought I would save some money on this product by purchasing a refurbished unit. The device works fine but customers deciding to purchase a refurb should be aware that they have no serial number on them.
While configuring the router, I had a simple question about an option with the latest firmware version. The built in help menu was somewhat lacking. So I placed a call to the Netgear customer support just to ask a simple question about this new feature in the firmware. They refused to help me because there was no serial number to enter a ticket against. This could be problematic for the purchaser if real help or service is required. Other than that, I am satisfied with the unit. It is functioning as expected.
It is slow. January 9, 2010 S. McAllister 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
With Netgear Prosafe VPN Firewall 8 FVS318 I get about 6 Mb/s download, using my computers firewall I get about 17 Mb/s download. Using ShieldsUP! as a test both pass. The FVS318 is only 10/100 that may be the problem or it may just be slow. I'm not going to use the FVS318.
its a good product for small businees with 50/60 employees. December 21, 2009 Kazi Faisal (NEW YORK, USA) hi i bought this product 15 days back for our office. and its working fine. only drawback - you can not create DHCP Scope.
Slow throughput (6 Mbps) to the internet December 17, 2009 Ben (New York, NY United States) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
We've had this router for a few years now and it's worked like a champ!
But we now have 30 Mbps internet service from our cable provider and this Netgear router cannot process the data any faster than 6 Mbps. (probably this is all the firewall can handle.)
If you need throughput to/from the Internet that is faster than 6 Mbps buy a more powerful router - as we are about to do.
